Kingdom Partners, COVID-19, and the Call to Care for Others.

Hello Family and Friends,

This is a crazy time in the history of the world, and we are desperate for your prayers as Tammy and I move forward with Kingdom Partners Global.  There are so many opportunities for God to use us all and we want to be listening carefully and obeying immediately. We want to fill you in on what He is doing through Kingdom Partners Global and, therefore, us. If you read Tammy’s updates, some of this will be repetitive, but we thought we would give you the complete history to fill in the gaps. This will be lengthy, but please read it to get the full picture.

Over the past two weeks Kingdom Partners has been able to help provide food for more than 500 people in Kenya who are struggling during this COVID-19 crisis.

Margaret provides food for 25 families in Kenya, a task that has become difficult with the new challenges of COVID-19.

There are really two stories here that need to be told. (some names have been changed for the sake of those we are serving*) The first story is the story of Margaret. We met Margaret in 1992 when we were living in Kenya. Margaret, a widow with four children, including one with special needs, would come and help us in our home. It is important to understand that in the culture Margaret lives in, women are second class citizens and widows especially are looked down on and rarely treated well. As a widow, she had nothing to pass on to her family. We felt strongly from the Lord that we should buy her a small one-acre piece of land; this would give her something to be able to pass on to her children. Back in the mid 1990’s, an acre of land in Africa was dirt cheap for Americans to buy and caused us very little financial burden. We thought that was the end of the story, but God had different plans. Margaret is a woman who loves Jesus and she shows that love to the people she encounters. Over the next 20 years, Margaret was wise with what she had been given. She grew food and sold what she grew and with her money purchased two additional acres of land around her farm. Then with the help of her business-minded daughter Beth, she began to grow a lot of produce and also raise livestock. Among her livestock is a sheep named Tammy (name not changed.) God blessed Margaret’s harvest and Margaret was generous. In 2000 Margaret began to use her produce as well as extra items she traded for to be able to feed a primary school of 25 children lunch every day. Then in 2015 she expanded from feeding 25 children to feeding their families as well. Because of problems created with shutdowns related to Covid-19, funds are getting very tight for Margaret. Through donations to our Feeding Africa goal, we were able to assist her this last week in continuing to feed those families.

Families in Nifah’s community are overjoyed to receive food

Families in Nifah’s community are overjoyed to receive food

The second story began in 2016. We met Nifah* when we visited an orphanage in Kenya. In Kenya children can end up in orphanages even if their parents are still living but cannot afford to feed or care for them. Eventually when Nifah finished high school, she returned to her family. During our visit Tammy and Nifah made a strong connection and have stayed in contact. With the spread of COVID-19, Tammy sent Nifah a simple text, “How are you doing?” Nifah told her “we are struggling but God will provide for us.” After more conversation Nifah admitted that her family had no food. Nifah and her family live in one of the largest slums in Kenya, typically they go out during the day and take odd jobs so that they can have money to buy food in the evening. With social-distancing guidelines in place, they are unable to go out and earn money which means no money to buy food or water. Tammy immediately felt strongly, “This is not okay, we need to do something!” We discovered it takes only $5.60 to feed a family of 9 for a whole day (less than $40 for a week)!!! I agreed that we should send them enough money to supply them with a month’s-worth of food.  We found a secure app that does not take fees out, and since we have been to Kenya and have personally met Nifah (which we had to prove by sending photos of our passport and Kenyan visas), we qualify to use this app.  We sent the money and she received it immediately. When Tammy followed up the next day, she felt led to ask, “How are your neighbors doing?” Nifah sheepishly replied that some are doing great, while others are still struggling. It turns out they could not live with the thought of having so much food while others around them were going to bed hungry so they gave to the 10 neediest families in their neighborhood. We shared out of our abundance, but they shared out of their poverty leaving them with only a 3-day supply of food. This completely broke Tammy, and she shared with her Bible study and put a post on FaceBook…God touched hearts to give generously, and we were able to provide enough food for a week to 10 more families making it 20 families being fed! Yet God was not finished! We eventually became aware of the fact that there are 50 families (all single moms with a combined total of nearly 400 children) in Nifah’s realm of influence, and we prayed and watched God supply enough to feed all 50 families for a week! A few days later, we were made aware of the fact that none of these families have running water in their one-room homes. They had to purchase water for drinking, cooking, cleaning purposes and no one could afford to buy water!

Women filling as many containers as they can with clean water.

Women filling as many containers as they can with clean water.

We were able to purchase water for a week for all 50 families and the “water people” were so astonished that they gave Nifah a key for the week to allow anyone to get water at any time for the 7 days! They filled up every possible empty container with water! We are continuing to send money weekly and have now fed them for 2 weeks and we will be able to feed Nifah’s 50 families and Margaret’s 25 families next week! In the past two weeks, God has provided for and allowed Kingdom Partners to provide food for upwards of 500+ people!!! He is the God Who Provides! There are MANY more families in this area… how many do we feed? In the midst of feeding these people they are faced with more bad news creeping towards their doors. The government just demolished the homes of 700 families who lived in the same slum only 5 minutes from Nifah and her community leaving them all homeless!  The timing couldn’t be worse for these families as it is tragedy on top of pandemic.  Where and how do these people shelter-in-place to ride out Covid-19 with no money, no food, and now no home?

Many homes like this one in Kairobangi slum, are being demolished by the government, leaving hundreds of people without shelter during a time of crisis.

Many homes like this one in Kairobangi slum, are being demolished by the government, leaving hundreds of people without shelter during a time of crisis.

Many questions are rising up in our minds… Do we feed more and use up all the money we have collected in one fell swoop?   Do we feed fewer and take care of them longer?  Also, it is getting colder there: as our weather warms up theirs is cooling down …do we help provide blankets, shelter…? The needs seem endless as Nifah lives in the 2nd largest slum in Kenya with 600,000 people living there. How do we fulfill the scripture in James 1:27 which says, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” God knows the whole picture and started these relationships between us and these precious ladies many years ago knowing that there would be this great need now! He is using the MEANS of His children here to provide the NEEDS of His children there! WE COVET YOUR PRAYERS as we continue to ask God how much He wants us to do as each day presents more need, and we want to be faithfully obeying God and staying within Kingdom Partners’ mission, “…to unite the Church and to inspire her to action, providing help to those in need, both locally and globally, and to encourage and equip those who are about God’s work.”

You may be asking, “What can I do? How can I help?” First and foremost, PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for us as we try to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us and make wise decisions, and pray especially for all those in huge need around the world…that God will meet those needs. Second, give out of the abundance of what God has given to you either here or anywhere else that God lays on your hearts. If you choose to give through Kingdom Partners, 100% will go to helping these families and you will get a tax deductible receipt. A little bit can go a long way, especially with how far our dollar goes in third-world countries. This last week, we were able to send $550, for food and water, divided among 75 families. That’s about $7.33 a week, or $1.05 a day! Third, teach your children to be generous and share. Include them in your giving by telling them what you are doing and why. Finally, thank God for His Providence and care and please pass this information on to anyone you know who would be interested in helping. Thank you all, or as they say in Kenya “Asante sana!”

April 2020 update

Hey, Guys and Gals! I wanted to get a letter out and touch bases with you all in these crazy days.  I originally started writing an update two weeks ago, but that’s now totally obsolete and in the trash.  I will try again...

First, I want to say that God is still good and He is still in control.  None of this took Him by surprise.  As I look over the situation and ponder and pray, I am more and more amazed at God's hand in all of this.  With one virus, virtually idols of all kinds have come crashing down.  Just as God battled the false gods of Egypt with the Plague, He has just ripped down all of the idols that we have set in place and that take all of our time and attention.  There are no sporting events or concerts to watch or attend.  Travel and shopping have virtually ceased to exist.  Our money is taking a hit.  The government is struggling to stay on top of the current situation.  All that is left standing is God, He is the only thing that is Unshakable and Unstoppable.  We now have time to honor and worship Him.  Let’s not waste this amazing gift of time that God has given most of us around the world to set things in the right order.  Thank you, God! Continue to fix the foundations of our lives. Here are links to the 3 worship/church services we have been participating in each Sunday in case you don't have one to attend: Immanuel Kenosha.Church, The Tabernacle, and Living Light Church.

Prayer is one of the ways I’m actively staying connected with other people and I would encourage you to do the same.  Although I am unable to do face-to-face visits for prayer, I am using FaceTime, phone calls and Zoom to pray with and for others.  I want to share this little story with the hopes that it will encourage you and spur you on to good works.  One of the guys in my home group named Joe texted me.  Some people call them life group, small group, caring group or a variety of other terms, but it's just a collection of believers meeting regularly to do life together.  Joe texted me asking if I could prayer for him because he had had Influenza B for a week, and it was getting worse. I prayed for him for 20 mins and nothing happened.  Then I felt God nudge my heart to get the other men in home group involved.  So I told Joe, "I’m going to hang up, text the guys in our group to pray, and call you back in 20 minutes."  So I did that, and two other guys started praying, I called Joe back.  And GOD HEALED JOE!  Man, we serve an amazing and powerful God! All this to say, you can do the same thing.  You can pray for God's healing in a time where that’s what people need, and you will see God do amazing things.  When you hear of someone sick from the corona virus, don’t just throw up a prayer for them, go on the offensive, call them and pray for God's healing on their life.  At one of the local churches here in Kenosha, one of the deacons came down with what he thought was COVID-19.  He had been home sick for 5 days.  He had been in contact with his doctor and was just about at the point of going to the emergency room. Just before going to the ER, he went to his church's online prayer meeting, where they prayed for him and his breathing became much better...by bedtime, all of his symptoms had disappeared! Way to go, God! (He later got the results that he had RSV) I was able to pray with this guy last night and he was still in awe that God had healed him.  This needs to be our new normal, not the surprise that God would heal, but pushing into the fact that He can and will heal others.  We need to step up our game.  All that said, I have added a link below where you can send me any prayer requests you might have and I will be happy to pray for you, especially during these troubled times for the world.

Naturally Supernatural

It looks like my seventh annual trip to Soul Survivor Church, which puts on the Naturally Supernatural Conference, in England with pastors and leaders from Kenosha may be the last trip I am taking for quite some time. This year’s trip included 9 guys from Kenosha  and my son, John, joined us again for the conference, making it 10.  Their were 5 churches represented including mine. It was great to be back in Watford with my good friend Mike Pilavachi. There is just something about the extended time of worship and getting into God’s presence that happens at this conference.  Each pastor brought a younger guy to pour into this year. I was able to  not only pray and speak into the lives of the senior pastors, but also the guys they are raising up to come along side them.  It was great to see the next generation experience God in some special ways. This trip is always an amazing key to building the unity of the Church in Kenosha.

We had a great time of fellowship just being together as we traveled through Portugal, and spent the day there on our way to England.  From the little we saw, it was a beautiful country.  However, it has a drug problem…I have never been approached to purchase so much cocaine or weed in my life.  They would even come into the restaurants where we were eating during our meals and offer to sell us some.  I even had a few offers for free samples, which I declined, in case you were wondering.

Koral loves Peanut Butter

Koral loves Peanut Butter

After the conference, I took my annual pilgrimage to Taunton/Wellington, Summerset, to see my kids John & Marie, Divan & Koral, who live on that side of the pond about 20 minutes from each other. It was important that I deliver Jif peanut butter, pickles, ranch dressing and a few other items for birthdays and Christmas. Each guy going on the trip gives me some of the space in his suitcase, and takes part of the gifts for the kids so I can bless them with more than I could carry alone. For those of you who really know Koral, you know about her PEANUT BUTTER PROBLEM!  Hahaha.  My brother Matt and son-in-law David Johnson (Kellie’s husband) accompanied me on the trek to Summerset.  We were able to again attend the Wellington Church which we try to do every year.  It was great to be able to worship with them and to be able to pray for them.  It was great to see my kids who live so far away.  I am so grateful that I can bundle those two adventures together.

Allies of Kenosha Youth

The Gathering at The Tabernacle on March 8th

The Gathering at The Tabernacle on March 8th

Allies was on a great path before COVID-19 turned our world upside down.  We started March off with The Gathering (a gathering of youth ministries' Sr. High and middle school across Kenosha area, and campus life clubs from local schools, for prayer and worship.)  God has been speaking a lot about unity and being on the same page.  So we were working towards that end.  At The Gathering, we introduced a Bible reading plan for all the students to do together via the YouVersion Bible app.  It was 21 days in Ephesians.  At the conclusion of the 21 days, we were going to come together for another Gathering.  During the 3 weeks between gatherings, each Church across Kenosha was going to be teaching the same lessons on the Armor of God as we were looking to mobilize students to reach their friends more effectively with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to go on the offensive.  That is all on hold now as no one can gather and everyone is currently looking at how they can best minister to their current students under these circumstances.

We continue to meet together weekly as youth leaders by way of Zoom meetings.  Thank you, Jesus, for technology that makes this possible.

Sr. Allies

The senior pastors and leaders in Allies have been faced with some incredible tasks these past few weeks.  How do we best care for the people we shepherd, and how do we take our church services into their homes?  It's a crazy, time-consuming task and many of the pastors are weary from putting in 90-hour weeks making sure that all the little details work along with all of the studying and preparing that usually has to happen to bring about a church service.  I am even aware of some that have been sleeping at their churches to be able to get everything done so services happen. Meetings have evolved from sitting around the table discussing best strategies and praying, to having online meetings and trying to get acclimated to using technology and making it feel natural as situations change from day to day.  We continue to meet weekly for prayer via Zoom, although I missed one due to our staycation (more on that in Family update section).  This is all new to everybody and we are working to try to get things right.

Family Front

We were all set to take our spring break to Tennessee two weeks ago.  We had our clothes packed, had groceries for the week in coolers and totes, had our swim gear out for the indoor water park.  The pets were set to be doled out to various people. We were ready to go!  There was no sign in our area of any of the COVID-19 at all.  Then about 12 hrs before we were to leave, our state made moves to help stop the flow of the corona virus. Schools were closed and a no-unnecessary-travel order was put into place.  The same as all of you.  So we did the only thing we could do...we turned our vacation into a staycation.  We had a Toy Story 1, 2, 3, 4 marathon.  We did puzzles, played games, ate unhealthy food (isn't that what vacations are for?), played indoor tennis (using foam plates with stick handles for rackets and balloons for balls), played video games, and a whole lot more. I stayed away from all meetings (although I did sneak in a few calls).  We had a great time being a family and focusing on each other.  Although it wasn’t our first choice or second ...or 689th, we still managed to make it an enjoyable time.

Last week was crazy as we tried to get Sarah and Grace up and running with online schooling.  This is problematic in itself, then throw in Zeke who was already being home schooled with his ADHD, and our house is a mad house.  Raising this group of kids is nothing like raising our biological children, it requires us to constantly go to God in prayer looking for supernatural wisdom to tackle these new problems that are unlike anything we have seen before.  The link to this lady's prayer summarizes what we and probably half of America is now going through.

Zeke Wins.jpg

There is another chef brewing in the family besides Uncle Dude (my brother David). We attended The Tabernacle’s Chili cook-off fundraiser for the youth.  And Zeke entered a chili, which He and Tammy made... He called it Zeke Olicious.  It was a pizza chili.  He told me he was going to win because he had the best chili. I was prepared to make this a great teaching moment and to help him rise out of the ashes and rebuild his life.  We got a lot of strange looks at first, but in the end it was voted kids' favorite.  Well, so much for my great in-the-moment teaching plans...throw them out and enjoy the moment.  When they called his name to come up and receive his spoon for winning, he was so excited he didn’t know what to do, he finally ran to the front with the biggest smile ever!
